Short answer: you cannot restore from Google Drive in MB WhatsApp, but you can move your chats by hand. Make a local backup in the official app, copy the WhatsApp folder to the MB WhatsApp folder, install the APK, and restore when asked. It does not work on every phone.

⚠ Read this first.
MB WhatsApp is an unofficial app, and WhatsApp can ban accounts that use modded apps. Signing in with your main number raises that risk. A number can only be active in one app at a time, so the app you verify last takes over. Keep a copy of your backup somewhere safe before you start.

What you need before you start

📱

An Android phone. MB WhatsApp does not run on iPhone.

📁

A file manager. The one built into your phone is fine.

📦

The APK file. Get it from our download page, but do not install it yet.

💾

Free storage. You will copy your chats and media, so leave some room.

How to transfer WhatsApp chats to MB WhatsApp

Follow the steps in order. Do not uninstall the official WhatsApp until the end.

1

Back up your chats in the official WhatsApp

Open WhatsApp, tap the three dots, then go to Settings, Chats, Chat backup. Tap Back up to save a copy on your phone, and wait until it finishes.

2

Download the MB WhatsApp APK

Save the file from our download page. MB WhatsApp has no official website, so be careful with copies on other sites, and scan the file with VirusTotal before you open it.

3

Find the WhatsApp folder

Open your file manager and go to the folder that matches your Android version:

Android 11 or newer: Internal Storage, Android, media, com.whatsapp, WhatsApp
Android 10 or older: Internal Storage, WhatsApp

4

Copy it to the MB WhatsApp location

Long-press the WhatsApp folder and choose Copy. Go to Internal Storage, Android, media, and open com.mbwhatsapp. If that folder is missing, install and open MB WhatsApp once so it creates it, then come back. Paste the copy there.

5

Rename the folder

Rename the pasted folder from WhatsApp to MBWhatsApp, with the same capital letters. If the name is wrong, the app will not find your backup.

6

Install MB WhatsApp and verify your number

Open the APK and tap Install. Android may ask you to allow installs from this source, so say yes. Open the app, tap Agree and Continue, enter your number, and type the code you receive by SMS.

7

Restore your chats

When the app finds the backup, tap Restore and wait. Open a few old chats and check that photos and voice notes load. Only then should you remove the official WhatsApp, if you want to.

If the transfer does not work

It does not find the backup. Check that the folder is named MBWhatsApp and that you verified the same number you backed up.

You cannot open the Android or media folder. Newer versions of Android limit access to these folders on some phones. Try a different file manager, or connect the phone to a computer and copy the folder from there.

Nothing works. Your old backup is still on your phone, so you lose nothing by trying again or going back to the official app.

Frequently asked questions

Can I restore my chats from Google Drive?
No. MB WhatsApp cannot read Google Drive backups, so you have to move the local backup by hand as shown above.
Will my photos and videos move too?
They should, because they sit in the same WhatsApp folder you copy. Check a few old media files after the restore.
Can I go back to the official WhatsApp later?
Yes, but you have to move your data back by hand, and some backups may not match. Make a fresh backup in MB WhatsApp before you switch back.
Does this work on iPhone?
No. MB WhatsApp is an Android APK, and iPhones cannot install APK files.
Can I get banned after transferring?
Yes, the risk is there with any modded app. A spare number is the safest way to try it. More in our MB WhatsApp guide.
